Thanksgiving!

Not our average Thanksgiving this year.
Cam, Kam & Aug came home Wednesday (out of school and the CKams had from 9am to 10 pm off from the motel) mid day and helped move some furniture (extra man power!) while we finished up pies & salads and then we all went to sushi and to our annual Thanksgiving movie ("Frozen") with my family.
Right after the movie we went home and packed up everything for Thanksgiving and over night bags and drove to Manti to the motel.
The next morning we enjoyed Austin's homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast and hung out playing computer, guitar, getting dressed/makeup, studying and working on dinner...

Cameron offered to take Alex hunting:
Then snoop dog (AKA Austin) decided to join them:
And James too:
(This is their serious hunter faces)
And their "nice" smile face - or at least attempt:
The girls and I ate delicious See's chocolates while they were traipsing through the mud and chasing sheep. So glad I'm a girl!
We also worked on getting dinner ready and Devree curled my hair with a straight iron.  Then Ry and I slipped over to Mount Pleasant to see our new niece/cousin:
Savrina Diana Turner:
Ry and I also stopped to find a rock for her science class:
It had to be in a place were it originated.
Great fun.
The table all set:
Hanging out waiting for the turkey timer to pop:
Enjoying Alex's food assignment - crab mouse:
Documenting our turkey pan problem:
(I forgot the turkey roasting pan. James went to Walmart to buy a disposable one and came back with a little smaller than a 9x13 roasting pan - because there was a picture of a turkey on it? James suggested using my stainless steel bowl that luckily, was at CKam's because I had sent garden produce in it earlier. CKams are use to cooking for two! They didn't have anything bigger! It ended up working just fine.)
The spread:
(CKams were in charge of potatoes and veggie tray. Ry made an Oreo cheesecake, Devree a pecan pie. I made the rest. Everyone did something which made it so much easier! Thanks everyone!)
Our handsome & beautiful children - our biggest joy and blessing:
(I know, a little Hallmark Cardish but it's true. I love the stuffing out of these six people!)
And a picture of the other end of the table:
(Proof that I was there!)
We watched a Christmas movie and had a pie fest.
Alex worked on his newest craze - pulling two crappy computers apart to make a better one:
The rest of us either fell asleep or watched the show.
On the way home we stopped at Ephraim's SipIt - specialty drink shack. The kids were thrilled - I don't ever buy soda pop. It was dad's treat!
We got home late and Devree went shopping with friends until 3 am.
Austin stayed the night in Ephraim and came home the next day.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Alex Update

Well, you can't read it very well but I wanted to document it anyway. I belong to a few Facebook adoption communities and one lady has a son Alex's age (who happens to be named Alex too) that is doing a science fair project about children that have been adopted internationally. He needed kids who have been adopted (and remember it) to fill out this questionnaire. I told Alex if he did it, he could skip journal writing this week, so of course he was game. The only catch, I told him, was that he had to be HONEST.

Here's my favorites:
6. How long did it take you to make up your mind to be adopted? Not a long time. I made up my mind right away.
7. Did you say yes because you wanted to be adopted or felt you had to say yes? Because I wanted a family.
8. How does it feel now to be a part of America? Different rules but a lot of freedom.
10. Would you like to have changed anything about the process? I love my family and I wound not change anything.
11. Is there anything else you would like to share with prospective adoptive parents?( I think he was a little confused about this one but I love his answer all the same.) They had helped me a lot. The are the best thing that ever happened to me. I will never in a million years want to go back to my orphanage.

Talking about his adoption isn't something he does regularly these days. He'd rather just forget he was adopted I think? He still likes borscht and last night I made verenikies (perogies) and he decided he only want borscht and verenikies for Ukraine Christmas this year.  Me, "Oh really? No pig fat or sunflower candy?" Alex groaning "Oh, I forgot about sunflower candy! I want that too!" But besides food, we don't really talk about Ukraine much.
He did get angry when we were trying to coordinate getting his eagle project delivered. He was reminded of how we would send packages and the orphanage director would open them in front of him and give him a few items and keep the rest. He thought she was saving them for him for later but, she was just taking them for herself or her grandchildren. We started talking about the things I sent and we both realized he got about 25% of them. That is way we're sending our art kits through a volunteer at the orphanage who will hand deliver them to the kids and not through the orphanage itself.
Alex is officially taller than me.
I had to concede last night.
I bought him a bunch of clothes for Christmas and gave him a couple of long sleeved shirts to get through until then (all his old shirts were too small) but he was too big for the shirts I bought? What? When did this kid get so big? I then started doubting all my purchases and had this brilliant idea to have him try on all the clothes I bought him for Christmas under the ruse that he was trying them on for my sister to give to her son! !  Brilliant! They're very similar in size. Nothing fit right and I asked his opinion and he didn't really like any of them! What?? Grrr. Back to the store I go. I was just saying to my sister how I love to shop for Alex, he's so easy! I don't usually take him with me for clothes shopping because when he was younger he'd just pick clothes that had TOYS with them - like headphones or a car or something. (Think Shopko - and they dumb shirts they have with some dumb character and a toy?) I just bring him home stuff and he wears it. He only balks at wearing plaid. Well, Sunday he came down wearing his sisters sweat pants after church - way too small! Because they were accidentally in his clean laundry pile? I told him  he had on girl pants and they were too small and he just shrugged and wore them the rest of the day despite our teasing. Then after trying on his Christmas clothes, I realized that he probably does have an opinion but he rarely voices it? And he's pretty content to just wear whatever?  I guess I'll take him with me shopping this next time? Let him show me what he likes. Let's just hope it's not loud obnoxious t-shirts with Angry Birds on them?

As he was putting his shirt back on he asked me "Mom, do I have any muscles on my back?" (He is super into muscles these days - if you touch his arm - he flexes.) I said, "I don't know, turn around and flex for me."
He did.
Then I said, "Yeah,  you have muscles. Want me to take a picture for you to see?"
He ran and got my camera.
I present proof of Alex's muscles. (And take note of those shoulders - I am returning all the men's  size small long sleeved shirts - even if he did like them - they don't fit!)

Journal

Last month James got laid off.
His boss called on a Wednesday to tell him his job was "safe", that they were letting the other tech go and his job was secure and then he got a call the following day that Shell was pulling out of the entire Rocky Mountain region and he no longer had a job.
Wow.
We didn't really see that one coming.
He's had an interview with Stat Oil in North Dakota and they have been trying to coordinate a second interview for about 2 weeks. Trust me when I tell you it's not us with the scheduling conflicts. Hopefully it will be this Thursday - but we've been put off so many times, I'll believe it when it happens.
Luckily real estate has been gangbusters so we'll be fine for a bit.
In other news......

Devree got a 24 on her ACT and that with her 3.9+ GPA will earn full tuition at Snow next year!
And in not so great news, she did not make the basketball team. She was pretty bummed about it but we sort of knew with it being her senior year and not playing last year due to drill, she didn't have much of a chance.

Alex decided to join the wrestling team and lasted all of one day. Here's our texting volley while he was at his first practice:

Alex: There is no one I know here.
Me: Great way to make new friends!
Alex: They are all 12th graders.
Me: That's okay. Next year you'll be the oldest. Just check it out.
Alex: Everyone is big.
Me. Are you the smallest? You only wrestle with guys your size. They will really need you if you're the smallest.

Then he came home and announced "wrestling just isn't my sport". After further prodding (because he's like a clam sometimes) he told me it was because everyone (including the coach) uses the F word. He was just recently asked to be the president of his teachers quorum and felt that he shouldn't be around that kind of language. (Melt my mothers heart!) AND he knocked his tooth lose. Luckily it seems to have tightened back up but since we spent 5K on his mouth.....I'm okay with this NOT being his sport! Back to water polo we go. (Well, we never really stopped, just thought we could add wrestling in until water polo started up again  in the spring.)
We are also frantically working on Alex's Eagle Project. We're so close. Just waiting on final signatures and then we will be soliciting everyone we know for donations and support!

Austin is surviving his 1st semester of college. He HATES his math class and complains that it takes all his time. Hopefully he'll find more joy next semester when he takes more business classes?

Both Rylee and Devree got a 4.0 last term!

Kambree is doing awesome in nursing school. I worry about her, she doesn't sleep much and she and Cameron have so much on their plate running that motel and going to school. I don't see or talk to them half as much as I'd like to and they're rumoring about moving to Alaska. ALASKA!! I just have to put it out of my mind or I'll go crazy.

My Ry is dancing six hours a week getting ready for her Christmas recital. She has also become a social butterfly and taken up with a fun bunch of girls that like to get together spontaneously for parties, movies and game nights. Unfortunately none of them can drive or live within walking distance so that make parents spontaneous cab drivers every weekend.
Joy.

Ella's been having weirdness. Panting and shaking and the trying to nestle into our necks. We took her to the vet and she said she needed her anal glands expressed. It solved the problem for a couple of weeks but then we had another attack. We've diagnosed it's eating table scrapes that give her tummy aches?  So James researched dog foods and bought a high quality one in hopes that we don't have any more issues? She has gone cold turkey off of table scrapes - and she's not loving that.

We're taking Thanksgiving to our married kids this year since they can't leave the motel. It was 4 years ago we took Thanksgiving to James in Pinedale. Wow. Four years ago everyone was living at home, Alex had been home for only six months and everyone was shorter than me! Now my boys are taller than me, I have one daughter married, another heading to college and the other passing for sixteen instead of her sweet age of 13. I don't feel like I've changed until I get really close to the mirror and realize.....I have changed. Luckily, I don't get close to the mirror very often and my eye sight from a distance gives me a blurry younger look? James eyesight is going too so... we're both a little blurry - which is why you should not marry a much younger person than yourself? It helps if you both age and get bad eyesight at the same time!

Maybe not hope, but a chuckle?

Just had lunch with some of our SAC parents.
My heart just hurts for a few of these parents with kids that struggle so much. I remember those first couple of years and the struggles we had with our Alex. I thought maybe I could find a blog entry showing how difficult he was and how far we've come to give some hope to these parents up to their eyeballs in contention and chaos.
First I found this hilarious entry:
(Just read the part about maturation.....so funny. I totally forgot about it!)
http://blessedwitharichhart.blogspot.com/2010/03/oh-my.html

I kept looking, certain I had one that I wrote in a fit of tears and frustration but truth be told, I didn't publish much in the way of the heartache I had with Alex the first few years. I tried to be positive and record the funny, good and tender moments. However, I did keep a private blog. I called it "What Wendy Really Thinks" and there I vented and said all the things I didn't dare put out there for the world to see. However, I deleted it some years back? Or at least I hope I did because it's not on blogger anymore?

But I remember feeling so discouraged. I felt that although I had given Alex a better life, that he didn't care enough or believe in himself enough to grab this opportunity by the horns and take advantage of it. That he'd never amount to much more then working in fast food or joining the military. He had no drive. No work ethic.
That's not to say that he's perfect now, I still worry about his relationship skills. We've started Husband 101 classes. Yep. I figure if he's hurting my feelings (and I have pretty thick skin), how in the world is he going to avoid hurting his future wife's? It's not that he's mean, he just words things in such a way that they're offensive and sharp. He's gruff. And his deep voice only adds to the gruffness lately. I don't doubt he can GET a wife but keeping her is my concern.....

He was so self centered when he first got here. He thought only of himself and having fun. He did the bare minimum in everything. Chores, homework, communication. He was all about rushing through and doing a crappy job so he could have FUN!
He still often times rushes through his chores or gets caught up in a TV show and can't focus but it is so much better!
Did I mention he all A's and B's this term? Not even one B-.
Pretty impressive.
3.444  - so close to honor roll (3.5).
He told me that next term he's getting a 4.0 because "I want to make you proud."
Oh baby. You already make me proud. And I told him as much.

But back to our first few formidable years.....
I was exasperated when I got home. There was parts of me that were counting down the days when he'd be old enough to move out of the house and be on his own. Now I'm dreading it. He'll be 18 before his senior year starts and I look at the next 3.5 years that we have left before he either goes on a mission or away to college and I want to cry. I missed so much of his childhood. I just want him to be "my boy" a little longer but since he's now as tall (or taller when I don't have shoes on) he's not much of a little boy any longer.

So, dear moms that read my blog. I know I recorded the sweet and tender stuff. I know it sounds all rainbows and lollipops over in my blog world but I've been there - maybe not to the extent that some of you have it with older kids and multiple kids but it is my hope and prayer that in time, like us, you'll find peace and joy in your imports.

If nothing else let me leave you with some of my favorite Facebook statuses. (Alex still gives me great material to write about - just farther and fewer between. I don't tag him and he's not an avid Facebook reader or I couldn't get away with this!)
I guess this is my new way to journal? Copy and pasting my Facebook entries?

October 30th 2013
Apparently my youngest son has super powerful vision? On the way home home he asked me, "Mom, what planet is that? Saturn or Jupiter?" Before I could even control my laughter and respond, "Never mind. It's a plane." In his defense, he's yet to take astronomy.

October 14th 2013
Last night Alex talked me into watching an episode of Walking Dead. Uhhh....gross? He told me I could hold on to him if I was scared. I don't think scared is what I was feeling but when the guy (not a zombie) got a machete in the head, I was done.
Later that night when we were watching Once Upon A Time (way more my speed), he was laying against me and wrapped my arm around his neck and my hand was laying on his chest, he asked with a wink, " Can you feel my steel metal pecks?" (Yeah, he's pretty lean and getting muscular and not very humble about it.)
I asked (while trying not to burst out laughing), "Is that the same as rock hard pecks?"
"Oh yeah, that's what I meant."
Then I did burst out laughing. Steel metal is a lot like rock hard! Love that we still have funny English moments....

September 21st 2013
After crutching through Walgreens with me to find non stick gauze bandages, medical wrap, and Neosporin, Alex told me "Thanks for taking care of me mom. I really didn't know I was bleeding yesterday. I'm glad you were there. Maybe you should come with me next time." Well? Apparently slicing your leg wide open on a motorcycle kick start is not a deterrent to riding motorcycles in the future?

September 18th 2013
Get this! Alex prefers ME to take him driving over his fun loving dad!
Of course, I've been teaching this boy since the minute the court declared him ours just over 4 years ago. I started with "chewing with your mouth closed" and now we're up to driving. Look how far we've come!
He told me as he walked up to bed "Don't ever get old mom, because I still have a lot to learn." I that boy!

 September 15th 2013
Things I loved about this week:
*Rylee Richhart's snap chat where she's standing in the hall outside the bathroom door and lip syncing while Alex Richhart sings in the shower.
*My long talk catching up with Kambree Wright on the phone and her cute picture of Cameron Wright blowing out his birthday candle on his stack of birthday Oreo's.
*That I actually had a texting conversation with my long lost son Austin Richhart and found a picture of him on Facebook posted by one of his new college friends. (Yes, I am a mama stalker. Why else do I have FB but to keep an eye on my kids?)
*Devree Richhart singing a song to me after midnight last night that she sang with friends to answer a boy to homecoming. (Oh, and the fact she asked me to proof her English paper.)
*Face timing (or texting or talking) with my hubs, James Richhart and keeping him up to speed on the goings on around here.
*One house under contract!
*The rain - except for when I wanted to ride and the rides I got in despite the sporadic rain!
Here's to next week! Happy Sunday!

September 7th 2013

I've been letting Alex drive here and there. So far, he's pretty good but he can tell I'm very nervous about it. He told me last night "Don't worry mom, I'll always keep you safe."
It's not really my safety I'm worried about. It's my cars!

August 26th 2013

Success! 2.5 sets of disclosures signed and in their backpacks. (.5 more tomorrow after B day.) And then a final list of folders, binders, notebooks etc needed for the school year.
Everyone survived. Alex told us about his Relief Society class (seminary - he just couldn't remembered what it was called) and a teacher he called Tit-sy. Which sounded wrong and it was. Thank goodness.

August 12th 2013
If you were to step out of the shower and hear heavy footsteps on the roof of your two story home (shaped like a barn with an incredible steep pitch) only to find your 15 year old and his friend having an air soft BB gun war on your ROOF, besides yelling, grounding and writing a two page paper on the dangers of being on the roof, what could happen and "how I'd feel if my friend died or was paralyzed" is there any other consequence this child deserves? Short of a good spanking? — feeling angry.

August 11th 2013
Alex told me that buying Jared Danger G. Walton's big, semi automatic air-soft bb gun made today the best day of his life....next to his adoption day! Wow. Glad his adoption didn't get trumped by a 2nd hand air-soft bb gun purchase. Oy! — feeling relieved.
August 7th 2013
(Austin and Alex gone for the week. Camp/College Class)
This week there has been:
No teasing
No wrestling
No constant snacking
No stepping on airsoft bb's
No video gaming
No basement of musky smelling friends.....
And yet, I miss 'em. (Not sure the sisters will say the same?)
So, I guess we'll go shopping!

July 28th 2013
Tonight I threw a surprise party for my son Alex's birthday. I've always had surprise parties for my kiddo's on their 8th b-day but I didn't have Alex when he was 8 so he got one for his 15th!
I told him we had outdoor concert tickets to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and to be sure to wear long pants and a jacket - due to mosquitoes. The whole family played along - complaining about not wanting to go - just like they really would. I had his friends hang out in the garage until they were gathered and then sneaked them in while we sent him on bogus errands to gather stuff for "the concert".
"SURPRISE!" (See video.) He was a little baffled and even after telling him he wasn't going to a concert, he asked if I was still going to the concert? "There isn't a concert love. I just made it up to get you in long pants and a jacket and ready for your party." His face was priceless - it was like he finally "got it!" As you can tell in the video - he wasn't really sure what to think. Pretty sure he's never had a "surprise" anything before.....
Now they're off playing air-soft bb gun wars and coming back for banana splits. Here's hoping no one shots their eye out! (I did require long pants and shirts - hence the mosquito insert to the story and safety glasses!)

July 9th 2013
Today while driving by my sisters house Alex spotted her cute and young nanny outside. His eyes got big and he asked, "Mom, is that the babysitter?" Me, "Yes." Alex, "Awh.....get me a babysitter!!?" Oh boy......
