Dev and Friends

Hi Mom!

Dad & Dev

On the bumper car ride

At the gun museum. Alex asked me to take his picture about ten times. He really liked the gun museum.

Rylee modeling the cannon section...

"Mine picture!"

One very wet boy!

Dad & Ry in silly hats-obviously the night was winding down by now!

Half naked wet boy in a blanket!

Ry & Alex eating licorice-Alex has made his licorice into a straw to drink his milk.

Our newest family members, Patrick & Sponge Bob

"Mom! What are you doing? Don't take my picture!" Notice this is the only picture of Austin? He hung out with friends most of the day and I wanted to document that he was there, so this is it!

Check this out, is he cute or what?

Lagoon

We made our annual Lagoon trip early this year-solely because we had discount tickets making the admission $25 instead of $41 plus tax. The weather was perfect-not too hot and although we were missing Kambree (she's at OYA-hopefully not freezing in the great outdoors) we had a great time. (Which is saying a lot-I'm not Lagoon's biggest fan but try to sacrifice one day a year to appease the rest of my family.)
Alex of course had NO idea what he was in for. I went to Lagoon's website to show him pictures but it really didn't give the overall scope of the place. He had packed his soccer ball and "American football" thinking Lagoon was like a park or something? Anyway, it was fabulous to experience Lagoon through the eyes of a ten year old boy....
James was sure he'd love everything! I was a little skeptical. We started out on Jet Star 2, Alex seemed to be okay although he did yell a lot but I was under the impression it was joyful yelling. Then we went on "Re-Entry" the ride that slowly rides you way up then you free fall drop for like forever-not my favorite ride-usually I just watch this one-but since Alex was a first time rider I thought I'd be brave and go too. He wanted to sit by me and I am not exaggerating when I say terror was the look on his face and the sound that came out of his mouth when the ride dropped. I reached over and patted him-forgetting my own terror-and told him it was okay he was safe, then in his haste to get off the ride, he forgot about the little bump at the crotch that helps secure you in your seat and got caught up on it and fell out of his seat on to the pavement. He jumped right up and ran for the exit.
We slowed things down with a ride down the stupid hydro tube ride and Devree and I were soaked. James and Alex didn't get it so bad and neither did Rylee & Austin but Devree and I looked like we'd peed our pants.
Then we went on the bumper cars which Alex loved.
We hit the other side of the park and did the music go round thing which Alex liked and then the Scrambler. He sat with me on this one and he told me, "Me scared." I assured him it was safe and that I wouldn't let him ride anything that would hurt him. Once again, he screamed in terror and then told me later he almost threw up. Okay, enough was enough. I was taking over the ride selection. We split up and Alex and I went to Dracula's Castle and Terror Ride which he loved and had no fear of-unlike his mother who hates scary rides.
At one point during the day Alex got stung by a wasp. We went to First Aid as a kind security officer upon seeing us rinse his hand in the drinking fountain told us they have some numbing medicine at first aid. Alex did not cry and we now know he is not allergic to wasp stings. (Something they asked me about at first aid and I had to explain I had no idea.)
While waiting in line for the rides we had many interesting conversations. I learned on the music go round ride that they had something similar to that in Ukraine and that two of his class mates threw up on it. On the wait to ride the Sky Ride I was telling him maybe we would be able to see Devree and Austin from above and spy on them. (They both met up with friends and were hanging out with them.) I joked that maybe we would catch Austin kissing. Alex told me I would say to Austin "You no computer, no TV!" if I caught Austin kissing. Then he told me "salt" and pantomimed spreading it on the ground and kneeling in it. What? "Alex did you have to kneel in salt?" "Yes" he said. "Why?" I asked. "Me reading not sleeping. Me six." "When you were six you had to kneel in salt because you were in trouble? For how long?" "Four hours-no walk two days." I was dumbfounded. Apparently this happened at the orphanage before the one we adopted him from and was a form of punishment. He was six years old! I hugged him and told him we would never make our children kneel in salt. I have no doubt that through the next few years Alex will reveal more and more terrible things that he's been exposed too. It just breaks my heart.
Then of course those stupid carnival games lured him in. I'm a firm believer in NOT playing carnival games but he had brought his own money and despite losing four dollars last week at Smiths on that stupid "pick up a stuffed animal with a claw" game he had not learned his lesson yet. He lost $8 and won nothing. Luckily Rylee and he had played a game together and she had won and knowing how much Alex wanted a Sponge Bob she elected to give it to him. He was thrilled. He'd been sleeping with this little tiny bear-the same bear he had me put on my key chain in Ukraine- he had cut the chain off the head and called it "mine little brother". I told him he could sleep with any of the stuffed animals down in the toy room but he told me "No mine." He clearly has difficulty understanding that we share things in our family and just because a toy wasn't given to him, doesn't mean he can't use it or play with it. I'm sure this stems from living in an orphanage where everyone claimed everything and labeled it as there's? He then told me "Me no like small toys-me big toy" So needless to say, he was beyond thrilled to have his OWN Sponge Bob and he has it displayed in a place of honor-right in the center of his bed. (I couldn't help but be proud of my Rylee for her selfless act and foresight in understanding her brothers need for this toy. Thanks Rylee you are such a sweet sister.)
Rylee talked him into riding the Spider Ride later. He would if he could sit with me. (Another ride I don't enjoy.) When we were standing in line he asked me with a very concerned face. "Safe?" "Yes, Alex this ride is safe in American we have many rules and the rides have to be safe or they shut them down." I don't know if he understood this-and privately I was thinking of all the horrible stories I've heard of about rides malfunctioning and hoping against hope that we would all be safe. I don't doubt after being in Ukraine and seeing the circus and lax conditions of just about everything that many things are unsafe and accidents happen frequently so his concern was surely justified. Not to mention I had never heard him use the word "safe" before-everyday he adds new words to his vocabulary.
Alex repeatedly told me "Fun day!" throughout the day. He loved the chicken and potato salad I packed for dinner and he even ate a peanut butter bar-despite his aversion to peanut butter-in fact he had two!
At the end of the night we were just killing time waiting for our older children to meet us at ten pm at the pavilion and Alex insisted he could run through the fountain without getting wet. He did for the first while and then, he got very wet. He told me "Me no cold." but I knew better, pretty soon he admitted "Me freezing!" and we went to the pavilion where I removed his wet shirt and wrapped him in a blanket and he and Sponge Bob sat and ate licorice until it was time to go home. (Licorice is another new food he has refused to try until I convinced him to have just a little taste. He-like everyone but James-is now a red licorice fan-James is still the only black licorice liker!)
We drove home and everyone was exhausted and got ready for bed. I had to return some work related emails so I was at the computer when Alex came down ready for bed and despite the screams of terror, almost throwing up and wasp stings he said "Thank you mom, relly, relly, relly fun day!".

Summer....here it comes!

It's Sunday night and the night before the first official day of summer!
Although I used an exclamation point after that first sentence I am anything but excited. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my children but I DREAD the summer and the statement that has already surfaced at least three times this weekend. "I'm bored. There is nothing to do!" (Or in Alex's case a bored look, a sigh and a twirling his thumbs motion.)
I also dread lunch. It's like you just get breakfast over with and then it's time for lunch, by the time that's cleaned up, it's time to start dinner. I just cook and clean up all day long. Not to mention my creativity for exciting lunch menu ideas is sandwiches or soup. Blah! I was so excited to hear that free lunch is happening again at the park. I told my kids they're on their own for lunch. They can make something at home-and clean it up themselves-or go to the park and take their chances that they'll like free lunch.
So, tomorrow Kambree leaves for OYA (like EFY but outdoors) if she gets packed. (I've been asking her to pack all weekend and it's close to ten pm and I don't think she's ready yet.) The rest of us are heading to Lagoon after Alex's first reading tutor session. We're also having "mom" school for 45 minutes before reading-which is something I use to do when my oldest were much younger. I'm just going to review spelling and math with Rylee and Alex but I'm requiring ALL my children to take the spelling test on Monday. If the older one's pass, then they're off the hook for the week, if not, they get to study too. (This stems from the experience I had with Austin last week while he was filling out a job application and needing my assistance to spell some very basic words!) Am I mean or what?
Kambree is going to nanny for Kammy three days a week, Austin (who is also hoping to get his learners permit tomorrow-scary I know!) has applied for a job at a bakery-hopefully he'll get it. That will relieve us of big kids a few days a week. Alex has reading tutor twice a week in June and his English tutor twice a week through the summer and both he and Rylee are signed up for swimming lessons. Devree has Oakcrest this month and she and Kambree have girls camp in August. Austin has scout camp in July and he and Kambree have Youth Conference. Alex also has a two day scout camp this month. And what fun and excitement do James and I have on our docket?? Nothing. Well, shuffling kids around from one activity to another. Whoopee.
Oh, wait I do have rehearsals starting this week.
I had an incident with Alex last night involving obedience, it might sound very stupid but it was over how many graham crackers he could have and although he agreed and said "okay mama" to the three crackers I allotted him, he ate the whole package. I sent him to bed for disobeying and he went without a fuss. I let him lay there for awhile and then thinking he'd be crying and pouting I went in to explain my position and he was not crying. Pouting a bit but not crying. I explained that I need to be able to trust him and he knew he was to only have three and he willing disobeyed. He told me "You talk, me bed." Which I translated as "I know you told me to go to bed and I did." He was taking his punishment like a man. I let him stay in bed for about 30 minutes and then asked if he'd like to get up and watch the movie we had rented for him and Rylee and he said yes. This morning James asked if he knows the word "trust" or "obey" or "believe" and he nodded negative to all three. So just how much does he understand? It seems like he's really getting it when I talk to him, he nods at the right time, he looks me in the eye and I feel like we're communicating and then later I start doubting it. Moral words are so hard to explain, it's one thing to point to an object and give it an English word or pantomime an action and tell the English word but how do you convey words like faith, trust, honesty? I decided to pick just five moral/ethical words a week and print the English word and the Ukraine translation. This weeks words are trust, believe, faith, honesty and obey. Poor little guy, he has so much to learn.
Last night he got a telephone call from some giggly girls in his class. They're friends of Rylee's but they wanted to talk to Alex because they "think he's so cute". This was right during his time out in bed and I told Rylee he couldn't talk. Five minutes later they called back and I took the phone and explained that Alex cannot understand them on the phone and that I don't believe in boys and girls talking on the phone at this young age. (Eww...I sounded so old and cranky!) I told Alex some girls had called for him and he just shrugged with this "Oh, well."look. He didn't even seem to recognized the girls names that called. I have a feeling we will have more giggling, blushing girls hanging out and calling for our cute boy.
So here's to summer lunches, spelling test and giggling girls calling for Alex!

Alex Update...

Alex is doing great. The other day James was not paying specific attention to Alex who was repeatedly trying to get his attention and saying "Dad, Dad!" Finally he marched out into the hall and said to James. "You no good ears?" We laughed and laughed about that.
This morning Kambree was telling Alex she hasn't seen him for awhile. (She's been busy with the end of school and Alex has been at Brach's a lot lately) He told her "You be men." Referring to Kambree being on a date last night. That made us laugh too. He's very observant of what goes on and always asks me "What you do?" when I'm leaving or coming from anything.
He also told me "You forgot money-money." because yesterday was allowance day and I hadn't paid anyone as I didn't have any cash yet.
Alex had his first sleep over with Brach last night. He said they watched "Home Alone" and it was "hee-hee, ha-ha" which is way of saying funny.
He and Brach are really becoming bud's. They don't say much when they're together and that seems to be fine for both of them. Both have a very common interest in video games. I as so glad they'll be in the same grade. Last night we went to my mom's for cake & ice cream for her birthday and Alex ran home to get the dart guns and he and Brach & Tyler played-according to Brach "an imaginary game" which Kammy overheard Brach tell Alex "Let's play imaginary Halo!". We both had told our son's no when it came to playing this video game so I think Brach was afraid to tell me what they were actually playing. It's fine with me if they play imaginary war games, it's the violent, bloody video games I want them to steer clear of! I think Brach and Alex will not only be cousin's but best friends. I worry that Alex would live there if he could as every free minute he has he asks "Me play Brach & Tyler?"
Good news in the mail this week!
We got a letter from Salt Lake Valley Health department stating that Alex's chest x-ray's look good and that we're welcome to have yet another TB text administered for free unless we feel the first test was good enough. I'm going with-first test is good enough. So we are cleared, no antibiotics or follow up, he's officially TB free.
The next day I got Alex's "Certificate of Citizenship" in the mail and now I can go and apply for his social security card.
I still need to mail his passport back to the Ukraine embassy and I would have already sent it except they want his picture attached to the form. Good grief. There's a picture on his passport, isn't that enough? Anyway, that's been on my list of things to do for three weeks now.

Awards & Scouts....

Rylee was giving two awards. One for scoring in the top 10% of her Iowa test and the other is a Eagle Pride award. Here she is modeling her certificates.

This is Alex in his scout shirt. It's Austin's old one and slightly too big but he'll grow and he would not button it and wears it over whatever else he's wearing that day. (He wasn't too happy about posing for this picture-due to the fact he was watching Sponge Bob as you can see on the TV!)

Attention runners, walkers and anyone else....

Hurray for our "Save A Parent" lunch. It was so good to be together and share stories and advice to the three families leaving this month. I am happy to report that the vote to close international adoptions in Ukraine has been tabled for now and that all our families are proceeding full steam ahead to go get their children!
On June 30th in Layton there will be a fundraiser with a 5K run or a 1 mile walk to raise money for "Save A Child" foundation. This money will be used to bring the next group of children over this fall. I know that had we not hosted Alex through this foundation, we would have never found him. So, this is near and dear to my heart.
The run or walk is $20 per person or your whole family can participate for $50. If you're not into running or walking that's okay-we can accept your cold hard cash too! Email me (richharts@msn.com) and I can forward you a registration form and more information. I understand there will be carnival games for the little kids and a raffle and this should be a lot of fun! (My awesome friends-and previous roommates in Ukraine-Amy & Mary are spear heading this event so here's a big shout out to them!! Whootwhoo!)
