My Paska!

I'm serving it at our family Easter dinner tonight.
Don't know if it's good or not.
My other children remembered having it last year from the Russian store and how dry it was. I told them I hoped it wouldn't be dry this year. Alex told me if it's not dry, he will save a piece for a few weeks and WAIT for it to be dry!
Crazy.
It's suppose to be dry?

Wheeler Farm Photo Shoot!

Shhh....it's a surprise for my mom (and she never reads my blog so I think I'm safe) for her birthday in June. We took all her grandchildren the Saturday before Easter on a photo shoot.
My cute cousin Kym took the real pictures but these are one's I snagged on my little camera.
Here's my five.
(Yes, the boys look like they're in pain. Keep an eye on Austin and Alex throughout for various looks of pain, grimace and constipation.)
All the grandkids. Syd was pretty upset at this point and the other grand-boys are about as thrilled as A&A to have their pictures taken.

I joked that everyone looks perfect in the next one!
The girls!
Austin standing on wheel. Why? Because he can?
A fake pose of brotherly love
A more real life pose
I think this might be the best of all nine.
My girls are not afraid of the camera....
AND they are pretty photogenic, if I do say so myself
The Boys....(Check out Zach's face....to funny!)
Kambree wanted me to take this picture of her by some junk. Her theory? If you stand by something ugly in your picture, you will look prettier? Whatever.
Austin in his GQ pose.
The boys again...
Alex looks like he should be on the old TV show "The Waltons"
They really liked posing on this old truck.
Syd & Kam
Dev
Ry
The oldest and the youngest grandchildren
I love this one!
The boys....they are really grumbling at this point.
All though he looks thrilled, Z was actually telling us he was done having his picture taken!
This is how Alex wanted his picture taken. I think he thinks he looks like a cowboy?
The boys were not thrilled about this one.
I can't wait to see how this one turned out from Kym's view point.

Bedrooms!

Alex's room...with wall to wall furniture:
If you look closer....what do you see?
Why, it's Alex! In his cubby behind his bed.
This is the shoot from over the headboard.
He loves to be in little nooks and crannies. I asked him why and we were able to come up with "they make him feel safe". He loves his new furniture and the arrangement because he now has a little secret place to call his own.

Here's Rylee's room:
Dev's room with the first coat of purple paint....

My many names!

Kambree messaged me on FB this morning but I missed her.
When I got to my computer I was greeted with the many names my children use to call for me:
Mama!
Mother!
Mamma sita!
Mom!
Mum!
Madre!
Bob! (how mom sounds when said with a stuffy nose)
Ma!
and when all else fails....
Wendy!

Happy 17th Austin!!

Austin wanted a very expensive long board for his birthday. So expensive that he had to help go in on it! But he was so very excited and is paying me back for his portion on an installment plan.
James was gone on his actual birthday so we planned to celebrate when he got home but Austin has decided that he wants to get "cut" and is on a very strict diet of lean protein and complex carbs and birthday cake doesn't fall into either category.  So, out of respect and support I didn't make him a birthday cake. (We do plan to take him to lunch this Friday on his "free day" to celebrate.)
Austin has grown so much this year and not just up. (Although he has grown a lot in that way too!) He's mischievous and often times inappropriate but he's also honest and tells us about most of his holiganistic activities and I'd much rather he be himself and inappropriate around us than to hid it and be a different person with his friends or at school. Austin is what he is. Funny, fun loving, and good. Deep down good. Even if he does like to live on the edge and is now sporting a long board everywhere he goes!
Love you Austin. No matter how much bigger you are than me, you will always be my little boy!

Ukraine Easter Cake/Paska Question....

Okay, so I'm trying to surprise Alex on Easter and make Paska. Or at least that is what he calls it. When we were in Ukraine two year ago during Easter (click on link to see pictures) we had some Snezhana made and they looked a lot like this:
No offense, but I would best describe them as dry cinnamon roll type dough, cooked in a large coffee can with frosting and sprinkles on one side. But, Alex LOVED them and has mentioned how much he loves them recently. So....it's time to put on my Betty Crocker moves and see what I can do.
But while researching for a recipe, Easter Cake/Paska looks more like this:
What? Where's the frosting and sprinkles?
After looking and searching which involved getting a cookbook from the nice lady that bought Rylee's dresser off of KSL (that just happens to have a Ukrainian mother.) and more Googling, I think I found an explanation:

Ukrainian Easter bread, or paska, is a tall, cylindrical loaf, usually decorated with extra dough and glazed with egg. These Easter loaves have been iced, instead. Other versions of paska exist elsewhere in Eastern Europe. And then this picture:

So BOTH are Paska?
One is glazed with egg and decorative dough, the other frosted and sprinkled.
So, anyone have a good recipe?
Maybe one without rum or in metric measurements?

If not, I think I"ll just wing it and make a sweet dough, put it in a round pan, bake, frost and sprinkle!
Wa-la!

Gosh, I'm tired!

I think this spring weather has stirred something deep within me.
Something that I haven't seen for a long time.
Something that I feared would be gone forever.
What is it  you ask?
MOTIVATION!!
I have just done the bare minimum around here lately (dishes, laundry, and making food) and letting the kids chores count as house cleaning. But Friday it started. I mopped my wood floors (an hour long task), reorganized my kitchen, cleaned the bathrooms (my least favorite task), went to lunch with my sister, ran errands/worked, and grocery shopped.
That night I began the adventure of swapping bedrooms by not only moving but REPAIRING the white bookcase into Alex's room and loading ALL the books on to it from the various places that they are stored on.
(I had no idea that Alex has purchased FIFTEEN books from the school library. I kept asking, "What are all these library books? Are they over due?" Nope. They're Alex's. I think they cost a quarter? He sure likes to own things but for a boy that doesn't like to read, I think it's a little odd that he's buying books. Oh well. He claims to have read many of them but when I asked him what they were about he told me he read them but he didn't understand them. Well, at least he's honest?)
This morning I ran with my sister (52 minutes thank you very much!) and then with the help of my fabulous children moved the double bed downstairs, the HUGE dresser with the mirror into Rylee's room, the queen log bed and dresser into Alex's room, sold two dressers and got them out of here, cleaned inside and out both Alex and Ry's room, cleaned mine and James room,  and get this....PAINTED Devree's new room (the bottom half) a lovely shade of purple!
Phew!
All the kids were big helps. Alex took apart the pine bed and put it back together. (He did everything and anything requiring a tool - need to take the mirror off of  the two ton dresser to get it into Ry's room? No problem. Alex whips out his OWN screwdriver!)  Rylee worked as long as I did and cleaned out every drawer and threw out all her too small clothes. Once Devree woke up enough, she really helped out too. She helped with the moving, did the majority of the taping of her room and made dinner. Austin was at a sleepover right when we really could have used him but Alex stepped up to the plate and carried equally what I did. He really is a good worker when he wants to be. Austin then graced us with his man power for the final move of the queen mattress, the pine dresser and helped the folks that bought Ry's old dresser off of KSL load it down the stairs and into their van.  (He also went and dug out some weeds in the front flower beds.)
I am exhausted - we all are -  and my hands are covered in purple paint but I feel such a sense of satisfaction.
We took a break and went to lunch, bought paint and hit the dollar store for brushes (because I'd rather throw them away then wash them out!) and Alex pointed out "Hooba Booba" gum at the checkout stand.
"Hubba Bubba?"
"No. In Ukraine it is called Hooba Booba."
(Teeheehee)
That cracked me up and I have been calling him ""my little Hooba Booba" all afternoon.

He also asked me what "steel" chips were? "Do they break your teeth?" The word he was looking for was "stale".

Often times when Alex creates a new word or mixes words up I think of things the other kids said as toddlers:

Rylee liked to "stern" things up instead of stir and "skabetti"  was what she said instead of spaghetti.

Kambree and Austin are 22.5 months apart. When we found out we were having a boy, she couldn't quite say his name and would lovingly kiss my tummy and call him Austy Boy.  (His cousin McKay - just a year older - couldn't say Austy so he said Auggy and that name stuck too. Then after falling in Lake Powell around age 12 on a fishing trip he was dubbed "Soggy Auggy." The boy has a lot of names and he answers to all of 'em!)  I found it endearing to find out that Kambree has Austin listed in her cell phone as Austy Boy.

Austin didn't talk much because Kambree did all his talking but he would point at the lights and say "yites" over and over. I was worried because that was all he said for the most part. I even  went and had his hearing tested. He could hear just fine he just let Kambree do the talking. One of his first sentences was "Shoot magpies Dad?" during a phase James was going through. (Don't ask.)

I don't remember Devree saying too many odd words because she's always been very precise. So precise that when she learned the words for the parts of the body, she would remind us who had what. "He has a penis. She has a vulva." It was quite embarrassing but no one was more embarrassed than my brother. He took her to the mall and was mortified as she happily announced the anatomy of each mannequin as they passed by "Penis, vulva, vulva, penis....".  You get the picture?  (Troy still teases her about that every chance he gets!)

Since I didn't blog when the others were first leaning and making mistakes (or social blunders) I thought it only fair to share and document!

Well, the shower, my bed and my Kindle is calling!

Baby Egor (Alex's nephew)

Egor. (Pronounced more like Eggor - with a softer E. Not like the creepy, hunch back guy in Frankenstein.)
Not sure who the God-mother is but the God-father is Ivan's other brother. He's not Alex's brother. (Ivan and Alex share the same mother, this man Sasha and Ivan share the same Dad.)
He is so darling. Look at those blue eyes!

I got permission to post his picture on my blog. I guess in Ukraine it is "bad luck" to show off your babies picture until they're six months old? (I posted earlier pictures and was asked to take them off.)
Anyway, he is now old enough and he certainly is cute enough!

2 Years Ago Today....

I "sprang" Alex from the orphanage.

He was just a little excited to go "da doma" (home).....

Dang! He is so cute!

Reliable Hugging

Remember my deal with Alex this week?
No using the dreaded phrase, "I don't know"?
Well, you might find that challenge odd or peculiar but for the last two years (well, the last year -since he's been fluent enough to understand English) I've been trying to get Alex to verbalize his feelings, what he's thinking, with very little success.
For the first year he thought I was asking him how he was "feeling" as in "Are you feeling sick?" And his answer was "Okay" or "Good" but  once we got on the same playing field as to what FEELINGS actually are, his answer is always, without fail,  "I don't know." So, with the carrot of  "no journal writing for a week" dangling in front of him he has really taken it to heart and has refused to say those three words. So much that when you ask him something like "Where is Austin?" He'll answer "Why should I have to know?" Or "Where is the basketball?" and he just won't answer at all. (I did explain that this is not a game of trickery. If he legitimate doesn't know where someone or something is, he can say "I don't know." But when it comes to what is going on inside of his head, only he knows and that is when he cannot say "I don't know.")
So yesterday after school he delivered a few side-squish-his-cheek-to-mine hugs, an out right, front on hug, and then sighed and proclaimed that he needed more hugs! At that point I turned from my computer (I was trying to work)  and I pulled him onto my lap and he laid against my chest , wrapping his arms around me and looked up at me. I asked what he was feeling?
"Like hugging"
"Why do you feel like hugging?"
"Because......(big long pause).....because my mom in past never hug me."
Your Ukraine Mom?
Yes.
She never hugged you?
No.
"So you are making up for lost hugs?"
"Yes."
"Did anyone ever hug you?"
"My Dad and Ivan but my mom push me away."
"Alex. I am so sorry your Ukraine mom didn't hug you and I am so glad I am your mom now and I get to hug you. I am really glad you could tell me what you were thinking."

I've always thought this was the case. He really does like to hug....a lot! I felt that this was just the very reason but before it was always my assumption, that he was just trying to catch up on missed affection. (One week of no journal writing is so worth this little verbalization of feelings.)

Last night we were going over his vocabulary words for the week. This week we're trying to use the same words his class is. One of the words was reliable. After explaining it and giving examples, Alex informed me - matter of factually - "That's what you are mom!"
"Reliable?"
"Yes."
"Thanks Alex!"
